David Gunnels

In general, I like to do things “right.” What I mean by that is that I will wait and save money for a Dyson vacuum instead of making do with a cheaper model I can buy right away. That’s the reason why I have a commercial-grade blender and why I built my own computer. Of course, this behavior has caused a few hardships. For example, I had to live with a dirty floor for longer than I would like to admit before being able to afford my vacuum of choice. Also, this habit of mind means I spend hours researching my options until I find the right one.

This is what I was thinking about when I needed to make some changes to the first website I owned a long time ago. I looked at prices, performance, features, and anything else I could think about before I made my choices. However, when it came time to secure a host, I was a little tired from researching for the right CMS, theme, plugins, domain, etc. So, I ended up with a couple of oversights. I did not think about looking at how I would control my hosting until I was staring at a crowded dashboard of dead links and support pages.

A frustrating web hosting control panel can ruin even the best hosting. It is hard to appreciate the fantastic connection speeds and top-notch features when you cannot even manage it properly. That is why it is important to get an idea of a host’s control panel before making your decision on who gets to host your website.

What is a Hosting Control Panel?

Before comparing things, we need to know what we are talking about. We need to get an idea of the concepts here. With that in mind, let’s break things down a little.

A web hosting control panel is the dashboard that displays your available commands and functions in regards to your web hosting. What all features are available depends on the control panel. Different providers prioritize their own way. The dashboard is typically displayed as a graphical user interface (GUI) with organized icons or menu items.

In general, there are a few common items seen on hosting dashboards. You can usually access some of your account information. Also, this is where you enter the domain you have reserved for your site. If your hosting comes with email and FTP, you will see these features on the control panel too. The same is true for available backups.

What is the Most Popular Web Host Control Panel?

cpanel security risks

Finding the most popular hosting control panel is a little difficult. That is because it is common for your web host to provide a dashboard for you. Many times, going out of your way to getting your own control panel is something you do when self-hosting or perhaps using free hosting. Keep in mind that self-hosting is a huge headache and free hosting is never a good idea.

However, aside from your host, one of the most popular and well-known website control panels is cPanel. It is unique in that it offers two displays. You can use it as a GUI and as a server management console. The GUI is meant to appeal to beginners while the console gives the developer crowd more familiar control.

cPanel has a suite of typical features. You can manage your domain and email, implement security measures, and keep an eye on how the hosting is performing. You can also manage and schedule backups and manage the files regarding your site. And on top of that, it has a selection of third-party additions.

One big downside is that cPanel only works on Linux and iOS. You do not have the freedom to use the operating system you are familiar with, especially in regards to your home PC. Also, the layout of cPanel is covered in different links. It can be overwhelming trying to find what you are looking for. And unfortunately, there is a slight risk involving security.

cPanel security risks

Considering everything your web hosting control panel affects, you cannot afford a security breach. With cPanel, the responsibility of providing security is on you. If you are uncomfortable and unfamiliar with firewalls, SSH, and other security measures, then you might be vulnerable. Without anyone watching your back, you could easily end up on hot water.

What Should I Look for in a Hosting Dashboard?

web hosting control panel reviews

The best-case scenario is that you know you picked an intuitive dashboard before you buy the hosting. At the very least, you should be able to check out a few screenshots that give you a clear idea of how the dashboard works. If they have videos available, that is even better. However, be wary of a control panel that comes with several categories of hour-long video guides and tutorials. It is likely those are far more complicated than they need to be. At best, some hosts will let you demo the dashboard so you can get a much better idea and feel for the system.

You will want to make sure the dashboard lets you control what you need in a straightforward manner. You do not want to hunt down the command you need. And you especially do not want to do that only to find out you didn’t have access to it anyway. Simplicity is always a plus. You do not want to spend your time trying to learn how to use a new control panel. And make sure you can see some performance and analytical information for your website.

However, things can end up being too simple as well. Make sure that you get the control you are looking for. It may be easy to decide to forego certain control for a simple design. That might not always be a bad idea, but it is important to give it a lot of thought. Make sure you are making the right concessions.

What is the best web host dashboard for you? Some of it depends on what you find important. But in general, you want access to features and information about your web hosting in a simple and easy to digest way.

To get started, try looking into some web hosting control panel reviews. See what other people are saying about them. Final Thoughts

I learned a valuable lesson from the first website host I ever used. Sometimes, it is the details we do not consider that bite us the most. It is incredibly easy for some things to seem insignificant. When it comes to your hosting dashboard, though, it requires some real thought. Even the strongest hosting on the planet could suffer from not allowing you clear and easy control over your account and features. What good are features that are difficult or impossible to use in the first place?

Will there always be oversights on the decisions we make? Absolutely. Nobody is perfect, and we cannot foresee every single aspect of every decision we make. However, we can learn and grow with each bad experience. Here, though, you have a chance to learn from my bad experience instead. You see, part of the consequences for my rushed pick in hosting led me to use that host for years longer than I wanted. I would likely still be using them today if I had not discovered that some hosts, like WP Super Host, do a fantastic job migrating websites.

Your web hosting control panel controls a lot in terms of your experience in managing your website. Do not be blinded by the fast speeds and interesting features of your host. While those things are definitely important, you need to have a better picture of your host in mind. Consider all of those things as well as the hosting dashboard. You need a dashboard that includes the features you need in an easy-to-grasp manner. Else, you may find yourself stuck with a poor hosting experience for years.
